Realigned Highway 69 South of Sudbury

November 2009 saw the completion of New Realigned Highway 69 from 8.3 km north of Highway 637 northerly for 22 km to tie into the existing 4 lanes just south of Sudbury. This stretch of Hwy 69 concluded 5+ years of construction that included 6 Capital Works Contracts. During that time 3 concrete structures were built to provide 3 interchanges for access to the new four lane hwy. As well 10 concrete structures (underpasses – overpasses) were required to accommodate the travel on local roads crossing through the new highway corridor. More than 3,000,000m3 of rock was drilled and blasted for construction of embankments and to provide crushed materials for the roadway grade. In excess of 1,500,000m of Wick Drains were installed beneath the embankments constructed across swamps. As well 10,300m3 of Expanded Polystyrene was placed as light weight fill in the approaches to the CNR structures. To complete all the paving for these contracts there were 188,000t of superpave hot mix laid in the summer/fall of 2009. GLES provide environmental services/administration (compensating measures of fish/turtles habitat) for the complete 22 km while Tulloch Engineering provided the administration for all but 1 of these projects.
