Shadow River Bridge

Tulloch provided Contract Administration services for the Ministry of Transportation on the new Shadow River Bridge in Rosseau, Ontario. This two lane structure is the first of its kind in North-eastern region, the concrete deck being reinforced entirely with Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) rebar. First developed in the mid 1930’s, Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer rebar has undergone resurgence in the last few years and is becoming a staple in the bridge building industry. During the GFRP manufacturing process, glass fibers are woven together and pulled into a vinyl resin. Bars are then sand-coated to ensure a tough bond with the placed concrete. With similar strength and durability properties to steel rebar, GFRP is a light-weight product which makes it easy to transport and install. It is also much more resistant to corrosion than steel rebar, providing a longer lasting and cost-effective option. Tulloch and the Ministry are happy to provide the public with a safe and innovative solution.
