East-West Tie Transmission

The East-West Tie Transmission Project is a 400km double-circuit 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission line that generally parallels the existing double-circuit 230 kV transmission corridor connecting the Wawa Transformer Station (TS) to the Lakehead TS near Thunder Bay.  The need for the Project was established by the Ontario Power Authority to provide a reliable and cost-effective long-term electricity supply to northwestern Ontario.  The Project is expected to provide total eastbound and westbound capabilities in the order of 650 MW.  In 2013 NextBridge (a consortium between Nextera and Enbridge) was provided with a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) to develop the $1B capital project.

NextBridge engaged TULLOCH to complete the preliminary geotechnical investigations, base plan mapping, and access route planning.  TULLOCH was selected for this project, based on our expertise in working in Northern Ontario and ability to handle the very challenging logistics required for this assignment.  Most of the geotechnical boreholes required helicopter access, and much of the survey work required accessing the existing transmission line with ATV over very challenging terrain. TULLOCH is excited to continue working on this project through the development and into construction over the next number of years.
